TRAFFIC RULES IN INDONESIA

It would be a pity if your trip to Indonesia for the MotoGP race would come with a fine. Check out our tips on how to enjoy the MotoGP race at Mandalika International Street Circuit without extra costs.

Traffic rules in Indonesia are established to ensure road safety and smooth traffic flow. Below are the key traffic rules and regulations that drivers, riders, and pedestrians must follow:

Driving licence requirements

Drivers must possess a valid Indonesian driving licence (SIM). There are different categories of licences for motorcycles (SIM C), cars (SIM A), and commercial vehicles (SIM B).

Foreigners can use an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home country's licence, but for long-term stays, obtaining a local SIM is required.

Driving side

In Indonesia, vehicles drive on the left side of the road, similar to countries like the UK, Japan, and Australia.

Speed limits

  • Urban Areas: The speed limit is typically 40-50 km/h (25-31 mph).
  • Rural Roads: The speed limit is around 60-80 km/h (37-50 mph).
  • Highways and Toll Roads: The maximum speed limit is generally 100 km/h (62 mph), with some areas permitting up to 120 km/h (75 mph).

Traffic lights and signals

Obey all traffic signals and signs. Running a red light or ignoring traffic signs is illegal and punishable by fines.
Yellow lights mean caution and prepare to stop; red means stop.

Seat belts and helmets

Wearing seat belts is mandatory for both drivers and front-seat passengers. Motorcycle riders and passengers must wear helmets at all times.

Drunk driving

Indonesia has strict laws against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The legal blood alcohol limit is low (0.0% for commercial drivers and 0.1% for non-commercial drivers), and violators face heavy fines, licence suspension, and even imprisonment.
